We’ve taken a look at the styles and fabrications of denim jeans. I think all would agree that this is the easiest pant in the closet to put with a top, as any top will do. Except another denim top. Until now. And even now there are very few fashionista’s that heartily endorse this now accepted trend of wearing denim with denim. I’m spending a little more time talking about the wearing of denim because this one fabric has come to dominate our closets and, in a sense, the fashion world. We wear it frequently in all it’s many guises so if there are new rules, we need to know about them.
It’s a delicate dance if your trying to match the two and make a fashion statement. Face it, what kind of statement can be made if you are wearing a non-descript jean with a non-descript jean jacket? None unless you get funky and roll the jeans into a cuff, pull on a pair of boots and choose a darker or lighter shade of jacket than the jean to complete your look. The model on the left is successful because of the unique fabrication and detailing on the pieces.
Another option is to vary the weight of the two pieces. Chose a lighter weight shirt, open it (as shown in the picture to the right) and introduce a contrasting color as a layering piece. The camel colored belt shown here breaks up the sameness and adds interest. A light faded denim is great for spring and summer. It’s a soft, feminine, girlie look.
Varying the shades from top to bottom also works as reflected in the picture. Personally, I’m not so sure about those patch jeans but you get the idea. If you love your denim above all else and are now doing a little dance at the idea of a double up, just remember to break up the two fabrics either with an accessory or another layering piece.
Let’s take another look at the jacket. Designer’s have had their way with denim jackets over the years. They have been dyed, embellished, ripped, painted, bleached, re-tooled, so to speak, time and time again. Creative minds have exhausted the pool of new ideas for this beleaguered old timer. So now what? Back to the original. Which begs the question, “can I pair my old denim jacket with a pair of jeans?”. Maybe not a good idea unless you’re a guy, or a celeb. Take the jacket and put it with a contrasting color in a pant, crop, skirt, or even a dress. Wear with the vintage prints that are ever so popular. I have always loved denim with black, especially if it’s a faded denim. Why not choose a few stripes as a layering piece and participate in another popular trend for the season. Remember, trends are only good if they flatter your body and suit your “style“. Denim, fortunately works on almost every body. What about those stripes you’ll see everywhere this summer? Think you can wear them?
