Wear accessories with your outfit when dining out in Jacksonville.Transform an outfit. Start by picking out a pair of earrings. Stand in front of the mirror and watch what happens. Choose a necklace and put it on. Now add a scarf. Even if you chose haphazardly, most will agree to a more interesting look with a few accessories.  What we wear defines us. Perhaps it’s time to take a long look in the mirror before heading out the door. Ask yourself if the image you see is what you want to project. If not, the good news is  you don’t have to spend a lot of money for an upgrade.  In fact, a few well chosen items will add new life to some of those ”old favorites” sitting in your wardrobe. Take a look at a few ideas and color stories which may help inspire you.

If you’re old enough to remember the leggings of the 80′s, you may question wearing them today. I say that because some of us no longer have those slim, svelt figures we sported twenty some years ago. Should that make a difference? Women of all body types wore them back then and certainly will enjoy their comfort today even if it’s a questionable fit.  Which begs a couple of questions. Are leggings too shape specific for some of our bodies? Can a more mature woman wear them?

If they are worn with a top that’s longer, just about everyone, regardless of age or shape, can enjoy the look today. The length of the top is a key factor in successfully pulling off this look. Since we’re all different heights, pay attention to where your top ends. It should fall past the hips. The picture to your right belies that statement as two of the women definitely have shorter jackets. They are slimmer, granted, but I’m wondering what they look like from the back. We really, really, don’t want our derriere’s  enhanced, no matter how well shaped, when wearing a very tight, thin fabric. And yes, one can wear leggings with a skirt or dress. If you’re older, be mindful of the length and style. A short denim skirt with a pair of leggings generally looks  better on a younger woman.  A dress should be no longer than the knee if you are layering and even that look can be challenging to pull off if you’re on the other side of 40. Too curvy or too short?  Stick with the tunics.

Speaking of thin fabrics, how do we take this look into the warmer months wearing light weight tunics without showing off our best kept secrets?  You could create a bohemian look with loose, flowing fabrics in small prints, emphasis on loose. If you wear linen, try layering a longer tank belted with a big shirt,or close a few lower buttons and expose the tank from the mid-ruff up. Try a tunic length, light vest (over the shirt) or a cardigan in a crinkled fabric with a tank underneath. A light cotton twill fabric is a good problem solver as it’s hefty enough to be worn without layering and not too warm when it’s hot. Cotton gauze is another alternative but depending on the color can be on the sheer side and need layering.  Remember, if the top is too short or too tight , you’ve lost your chic.

Take a quick glance at the picture to you’re right. Ignoring the age factor, where do your eyes go?  Most likely the focus is on the tops these young nubiles are wearing rather than the bottoms.  Leggings, without exception, should be a secondary piece. Think of them as an accessory item.  Don’t wear leggings as pants.  Like any accessory, they are meant to add interest and a little flair. Matching the color of your legging to something else you are wearing pulls the outfit together.

So now comes the real dilemma. What kind of shoes look best with leggings?  Flats or heels? Most of us are long past the point where we want to toddle around in heels all day, as awesome as they look.  If you really want to go that route, then stick with a basic pump. Although leggings are considered more casual wear, a heel would be appropriate for an evening out when paired with a dressier ensemble.

A ballet shoe or a simple flat looks the best with this skinny leg.  A tennis shoe with a legging should be worn only if you’re at the gym.  Flip flops, no matter how cute, should be reserved for other types of casual wear.

Rules?  No, guidelines as I want you to look your best. Leggings are so much easier to wear in the winter time as the fabrics are heavier, there are more style options (sweaters, outerwear, etc.), and a boot of any kind fits the look.  Regardless, enjoy the comfort and freedom of these little skinnies while looking smashing throughout the summer.

If you are not turning cartwheels over leather for spring,  let’s talk pants. What’s the look for this season?  I could make this easy on myself and bottom line it and say wear whatever length or style looks good on you. That does sum it up for spring/summer. Anything goes on the bottom half. However, it is a little confusing as there are wide and wider legs, flared legs, bell bottoms, skinny legs,  trousers, crops, and leggings.  How in the world do you sort it all out?

The wide leg pant is a response to the skinny pant moving to basic status in your closet. Designers want new and fresh. This is understandable but the wider the leg the more difficult to pull off for the majority of us.  If you have height, perfect! If you are shorter but can wear the platforms and higher heeled shoes, it’s an elegant look. The line is fluid and forgiving. Just don’t forget about proportion. Wear them with blouses that tuck in or tie in front, and shorter jackets, crop tops, or boleros.

Bell bottoms tend to be loved or hated depending on your age. If you are tall and lean and have trouble finding pants that are long enough, you just might embrace their comeback.

If you’ve followed any of the “Fashion Week” shows,  you couldn’t have missed the” pajama” look. In my opinion, wide leg pants find their true placement in this venue. The fabric is loose and drapey, feminine, and flattering. A comfortable, cool look for summer that gives more of us an option to wear them without being overwhelmed.

Trousers have a way of always showing up on racks in stores, no matter the trend. It’s that Katherine Hepburn elegance that never goes out of style. We just see more of them in the fall and winter months. Now we have access to soft, flowing blouses with billowing sleeves and bows and ruffles to pair them with and update our look.

Cropped pants are good for any occasion and serve us throughout all seasons. However, if they are not the right cut or length (and length does vary), they can broaden the calves and make you look shorter and the bottom larger. Wherever pants end that body part is accentuated. The curvy, hourglass figure is best in a flat front and tapered legs. If you also have height, you can wear them cuffed and flared. Any crop length is acceptable. A petite or one with heavier thighs (pear) should choose a straight leg with the hem below the mid-calf or at the thinnest part of the ankle. Apple shapes can wear a little fuller leg to balance the body, although I have seen this shape in a narrow legged crop that worked. Fashion tips are guidelines only. Take the time to try different styles when you’re shopping. I am always surprised, in the store, when someone who shouldn’t be able to wear something comes out of the dressing room looking perfect.

Leggings are still around for spring and summer as are the jeggings (a legging with a jean style ). If you look as good as the model on the left, then wear them with anything. Otherwise longer tops are essential. Common sense rules the day for this syle. It’s flattering only if you have shapely legs.

The statement pant for this season is the flared jean. Let’s talk denim.
